Mediterranean Soul, Northwest Setting
This sunny, terraced property had evolved through separate projects without a master plan. Mismatched materials and planting beds affected by overpruning and disease left the garden feeling disjointed.
A Mediterranean planting scheme offered a unifying theme, embracing the dry, sunny conditions while honoring the homeowner’s heritage. We revitalized the beds with drought-tolerant plants, selected materials to harmonize existing patios and paths, and added large cedar arbors to bring structure and balance to the terraces.
The garden has become part of the homeowners’ daily life, a source of pleasure they often share with us through photos and videos. Seeing them deeply enjoy the space is one of the most rewarding outcomes of the project.
Overgrown shrubs were replaced with a layered, drought-tolerant planting scheme.
The project began with the client's simple request: design a patio to frame a new greenhouse.
The original light silver concrete stairs competed with the surrounding landscape and didn't connect to the patio below.
Rather than replace the stairs, we darkened the concrete to better integrate them with the garden.
New flagstone through the garden pulled all the garden rooms together.
A series of cedar arbors adds structure and balance across the terraces.
Plants flank and soften the space.
Layered planting creates glimpses into the garden and draws the eye through the space.
Multi-trunk olive trees provide a strong Mediterranean focal point while remaining well suited to the site's sunny, dry conditions and height restrictions.
A pineapple guava hedge provides privacy while adding silvery foliage.
